Home Alone Movie Guide Teaching Resources

Box Office Mojo estimates that the film sold over 67.7 million tickets in the United States. It was also the highest-grossing Christmas film until it was surpassed by Dr. Seuss' The Grinch in 2018. Home Alone was the number-one film at the box office for 12 consecutive weeks, from its release weekend of November 16–18, 1990 through the weekend of February 1–3, 1991. It was removed from the top spot when Sleeping with the Enemy opened with $13 million. It remained in the top ten until the weekend of April 26, well past Easter weekend. It made two more appearances in the top ten (the weekend of May 31 – June 2 and the weekend of June 14–16) before finally falling out of the top ten.

The next day, the McCallisters accidentally sleep in and barely make it to their flight, but when airborne they realize they forgot Kevin. As his family desperately tries to book a flight back to Chicago, Kevin is thrilled to have the house to himself. However, a pair of burglars named Harry and Marv have robbed several houses in the neighborhood and now have their sights on the McCallister house. The sight gags in HOME ALONE 3 are well executed, but some of the slapstick violence goes too far. Although protecting our home, honesty, compassion for the elderly, and other good values are presented in this movie, many people may complain that the gags are too scatological and painful. HOME ALONE 3 may be dynamite entertainment for young boys of all ages, but the painful gags may wear thin on parents.

Erin And Ben Napier Call Upcoming Christmas Movie Roles ‘Crazy’

HOME ALONE is a delightful movie with good acting, an intriguing plot and a generous supply of humor. There is a minimum of bad language and a very slight sexual innuendo. However, some people will be upset at the slapstick violence and the cartoonish pain inflicted on the bad guys as Kevin defends his home. Home Alone's runaway success upon release was due largely to its players, most notably Culkin. Previously cast in supporting roles in movies such as Rocket Gibraltar and Uncle Buck, Culkin is Home Alone's main attraction. Appearing in nearly every scene, he maintains a level of consistency that's a testament to both his talent and that of director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Mrs. Doubtfire).

5 Reflection Questions – These reflection questions are to be answered individually after having watched the movie. They can be answered in about 3-4 sentences but are designed to have students relate various parts or aspects from the movie to their own lives. Students are encouraged to share their specific life experiences from their past, present, or future plans.

After he took the assistant director by the collar one day to complain about this, daily call times were moved back from 7 to 9 a.m. On the other end of the schedule, the crew had limited time to film the many nighttime scenes, since Culkin could not work any later than 10 p.m. The McCallister family is preparing to spend Christmas in Paris, gathering at Peter and Kate's home in a Chicago suburb on the night before their departure. Peter and Kate's youngest son, Kevin, is the subject of ridicule by his older siblings and cousins. Kevin inadvertently ruins the family dinner after a brief scuffle against his oldest brother Buzz, resulting in Kate sending him up to the attic.

25 short Answer Questions – These are short questions to be answered while students watch the movie. They are basically used to keep the students’ attention and hold them accountable for the activity. These are usually completed individually but could also be completed in groups. I thought this movie was really good because it's funny and intense. Some sensitive people may not like it because there are people getting injuries from the traps the kids sets. While his family tries to help him from Paris and his mother tries to return to him, Kevin is very happy to have gotten rid of his family, whom he has difficulty supporting and who sometimes puts him aside.

The Baxter family moves from California to Maine to spend the Christmas season. Finn Baxter and his older sister Alexis are two technophiles who isolate themselves from their parents Curtis and Catherine by spending their days playing “Robo Infantry 3” and using their cell phones respectively. Sick and at home, Alex saw the burglars twice and called the police. But the police arrived too late and the burglars had time to leave. However, thanks to his father’s credit card, he visited the city and stayed at the luxurious Palace Plaza Hotel, located opposite Central Park. But the two burglars, captured in the previous episode, Harry and Marvin, escape prison and stumble upon the young boy a second time.

Kevin berates his mother for allowing the rest of the family to pick on him and wishes that his family would disappear. During the night, heavy winds create a power outage, disabling the alarm clocks and causing the family to oversleep. This is a good-natured, albeit unrealistic, family film that both kids and adults will enjoy if they're OK with the violence, profanity, and disrespectful behavior. Its endearing story and a charming performance by Culkin make Home Alone a standout among the usual holiday movie fare. Without resorting to the all-too-adult double entendres that dominate many family films, this one focuses more on slapstick humor and innocence to convey its story. That said, that very reliance on slapstick does mean it's chock-full of wince-inducing violence.

Columbus met with 200 other actors for the part, as he felt it was his "directorial responsibility". John Mulaney was asked to audition for the role of Kevin after being scouted in a children’s sketch comedy group, but his parents refused the opportunity. Columbus finally met with Culkin and agreed he was the right choice. Harry and Marv break in, spring the traps, and suffer various injuries.

He eventually has to protect his house against bumbling burglars Harry and Marv , who are planning to rob every house in Kevin's suburban Chicago neighborhood. This timeless holiday classic is a great movie to watch again and again. The film begins with the large McCallister family frantically preparing themselves for their trip to Paris the next day. Throughout the night, the power goes out during a storm and their alarm clocks don’t go off the next morning. They quickly gather their things and go to the airport but later realize that they left one of the children, Kevin, alone at the house.

Filming took place between February and May 1990 on location across Illinois. Finding his brother’s hidden money, he promptly goes shopping, stocking up on microwave dinners, junk food and laundry detergent. Back home, he does the laundry, says “grace” and then eats a macaroni and cheese dinner by candlelight. Less than 5 obscenities, 1 or 2 profanities, slapstick violence, and breaking and entering. Hughes had asked Patrick Read Johnson to direct, but he was committed to directing Spaced Invaders. He turned to Chris Columbus, who had left National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation before shooting started because of a personality clash with starring actor Chevy Chase, who Columbus said treated him "like dirt". Hughes gave him the scripts for both Home Alone and Reach the Rock; Columbus chose to direct Home Alone, as he found it funnier and liked the Christmas theme. Columbus did an uncredited rewrite of the script, which included the character Old Man Marley. He added the character to give the story a more serious layer, as well as a more emotional, happier ending. Home Alone was initially set to be financed and distributed by Warner Bros.
