How To Make College Your Home Away From Home

As unpredictable as moving far from home is, it is the best decision I have ever made. Even with its ups and downs, the people I have met, the events I have attended, and the overall experience have reaffirmed the idea that I made the right choice. Creating a second home here is rather simple with all the different resources. These are just a few mechanisms in place to help you find your community. There’s nothing like starting a new chapter in your life by moving to a different place. You’ll make friends from other parts of the country and begin to discover a place that you’ve never lived in before.

My roommates ended up being my closest friends throughout my first year. Being from Mississippi, the prospect of going to school in the northeast terrified me. Over a thousand miles from my family, I worried about being thrown into independence with no transition. However, much to my surprise, what I found at Harvard was a home away from home. How much you pay, as well as what discounts you qualify for, will vary depending on your provider. It is always a good idea to find out how much your premium might decrease or increase if you remove your child.

Head coach Lamont Paris' squad came off an eight-day break to defeat an in-state foe in the Presbyterian Blue Hose, winning by a score of 68-57. South Carolina overcame a midgame surge from the Presbyterian Blue Hose to secure their fifth win of the season on Sunday night. Meeting with a lawyer can help you understand your options and how to best protect your rights.

My dad works at the college I attend and my sister also attends Gustavus, and I don’t even see them most days. It is nice to visit them sometimes, but I am fully capable of having space from them. It’s different for everyone, but I do not feel as though being this close to home is keeping me from being independent. I have a great relationship with my parents and my sister, and being away from them can be sad sometimes, but I manage. I’m still far enough away to not run to them for help and make my own decisions, but I’m also close enough to visit them whenever it is convenient. I cannot imagine how hard it is to make a decision at this moment.

Even if you pack neatly and perfectly, you're going to forget something. When you live a long distance from your family, your mom or dad just can't drive it back up to you the next weekend, or the next time there's something happening on campus that they want to see. They have to ship it to you, you have to buy it, or you have to deal without.

I'd buy my favorite snacks or arrange plants in my dorm because my dad loved plants in the house. It’s important to have those reminders when you can’t call someone or need a pick-me-up. For the past 18 years, except for maybe summer camps or work trips, I had spent almost every day with my family.

How long does it take to feel at home at college?

Even though you went separate ways, there is an unspoken rule that you are still always there for each other. Freshman year was not "easy," but looking back on it, it was more manageable than you thought at the time. College only gets busier the more the years go on, which means less free time. Freshman year you went to lunch, dinner, the gym, class, events, and everything else possible together. During my time here I’ve noticed that a good percent of people go home on the weekends or whenever I can, some of them live about 40 minutes away, others maybe 2 hours.

Mary Hilliard, a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame, knew she wanted to challenge herself to grow as a person. Sending your new student little packages and mementos can help boost their spirits and remember that they are not alone. You can send them familiar things from back home, or you can even just send some food and seasonal items to make them feel more comfortable in their new space.

It is always a good idea to update your insurance provider when your child is leaving for college, even if you plan to keep them on your policy. The company might request their new address, but you should list your home address as their primary residence. Some parents might also choose to keep their child on their policy to protect them in the event of an emergency. Even if they don't drive often, keeping them on your policy can protect them if they need to drive to receive medical care. Additionally, many parents assist their college children with bills.

However, we are in hybrid mode this semester, and we expect to be 100 percent in person next fall . If you have any questions about attending NYU in the fall, check out the Iʼm Starting in the Fall…web page. Moving far away from home to pursue an education is not an easy decision. It feels like a stab in the dark, and you might feel bad for wanting to leave. There can be a lot of mixed feelings and adverse reactions that can cast doubt on something you want. I want to reassure you, before you make your final decision, that wanting to move to another state or country is a valid desire.

Once finals are done a huge burden is lifted off the shoulders of every student and it is time for winter break. Winter break allows us students to recover and have a good mental break from the all the stresses of finals and assignments. It allows us to relax and spend time with family, which is very important. Another thing it allows for us to do is let our livers take a little break, if you know what I mean.

Then there is the last few weeks of scrambling all of your knowledge together to gather your senses for finals. Well you could, but on the days that you don’t – you’ll need easy meals to cook for yourself. Whether you’re a college student cooking meals in your dorm or any other young adult, it’s important to find simple recipes to prepare that you enjoy. Expanding socially may help you to beat the freshman blues of moving away from home. Most campuses have clubs, recreational sports and special interest groups.

People can make your time away from home more bearable.

This goes beyond providing "space to live" and includes providing the sort of care and guidance parents would provide. Carey College welcomes International Students and others living away from home. Normally those students must be enrolled in Junior or Senior College, but in special circumstances we may accept International students in Primary classes if they are living with at least one parent. It is sad to look back and realize everything that has changed since your freshman year days. You started college with a clean slate, and all you really had was each other.

As I prepared to leave home for UC Davis, I realized that was not going to be the case for much longer. Being a college freshman, some days we just want our parents to take care of us. Because travel fares can be crazy expensive, you will probably see your family and close friends a few times out of the year. When you are distant from the people you love the most, you can’t help but miss the things you once took for granted. When you do go back for a visit, you will make the most of the time you spend with those you care about. In 39 out of 50 states, more students attend college within their home state than attend out-of-state universities.

Not the horror story kind of roommate, but the one that was truly awesome.

There is a sense of unfamiliarity when it comes to moving to a college far from home. You have to look into what is going to make the unfamiliar environment familiar. Look into the various school resources and clubs that are going to help you create your home away from home.
